This is another ghost sign, on the gable end of a terrace on Liffey Street Upper. It’s a nostalgic favourite and there’s something magnificent about the sign fading to Hector Grey’s name floating above the city.
Hector Grey’s was at 6 Liffey Street Upper, though he began with a market stall on Lower Liffey Street by the Dublin Woollen Mills. It was a bargain shop selling hardware and toys and ornaments, and the density of stuff in the small shop added to the power of Grey’s character – visiting there as a kid, it seemed like absolutely anything might be hidden somewhere in there.
